The Development of EBARA, a Century-old Brand

Introduction

The world-renowned pump brand Ebara (Ebara Manufacturing Co., Ltd.) had a net sales of approximately RMB 32 billion in 2020. Ebara’s sales in China exceeded RMB 4.9 billion, which was basically the same as in previous years.

Ebara is the founder of the centrifugal pump theory. Through nearly a hundred years of development, Ebara has established 101 subsidiaries and 18 joint-stock companies around the world, with a total of nearly 20,000 employees. It has become one of the world’s top 500 mechanical manufacturing companies and one of the world’s largest pump product manufacturers, with annual sales of more than 4.5 billion US dollars, of which pump products have annual sales of more than 2.2 billion US dollars, ranking among the top two in the world in pump sales.

Establishment of the company

Ebara Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was founded in 1912 (formerly known as Iguchi Machinery Office) and changed its name to Ebara Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in 1920. In 1938, the Haneda Factory was established, which is a large pump factory with the world’s largest test field and the most advanced hydraulic component production line; in 1965, the Fujisawa Factory was established, which mainly produces general-purpose pumps, refrigerants, semiconductors and production machinery; and later the Sodegaura Factory was established to produce compressors, gas turbines, gas turbines and high-speed rotating machinery.

Development History: A Century of Events

In 1912, Kiyoshi Hatakeyama founded the predecessor of Ebara, the Iguchi Machinery Office, where the Japanese Iguchi water pump was born. In 1920, the Iguchi Machinery Office was officially renamed Ebara Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Ebara has since embarked on the road of professional water pump business.

  • In 1921, Ebara Works was established and began manufacturing and selling pumps.
  • In 1930, the first centrifugal chiller was manufactured.
  • In 1938, a new factory was built in Haneda, Kamata-ku, Tokyo.
  • In 1941, a new Kawasaki factory was built in Nishikase, Kawasaki City.
  • In 1942, axial compressors and steam turbines for jet engines were trial-produced.
  • In 1952, the production of cooling towers began, and the first square cross-flow cooling tower was produced in 1955.
  • In 1956, the standard pump business was officially launched.
  • In 1961, it entered the waste treatment equipment business. The first grate-type garbage incinerator was delivered.
  • In 1962, Japan’s first circular counterflow cooling tower was produced.
  • In 1965, the Fujisawa factory was newly established.
  • In 1970, the production of water supply units began. The following year, the Central Research Institute was established at the Fujisawa factory.
  • In 1973, Japan’s first closed cooling tower was produced. In the same year, three of the world’s largest ultra-low temperature compressors were delivered.
  • In 1975, Ebara Industrial Mecanicos A Comercio was established in Brazil and a new Sodegaura plant was built. The world’s largest drainage pump station at that time was supplied with record-breaking large pumps.
  • In 1977, the first mobile ground incinerator for urban garbage was delivered.
  • In 1983, a high-pressure seawater jet pump was delivered to India.
  • In 1985, the Kawasaki plant and the Fujisawa plant were merged.
  • In 1986, the semiconductor industry was launched and the first Roots dry vacuum pump was delivered.
  • In 1989, Ebara delivered the first internal circulating fluidized bed boiler. In the same year, Ebara Italy was established. In 1990, the Environmental Business Headquarters was newly established.
  • In 1992, the first CMP equipment was delivered. In the same year, Ebara Environmental Equipment Co., Ltd. was established in Qingdao, China. The Environmental Medicine Center was established within the Environmental Business Division.
  • In 1994, it was integrated into three business divisions of wind power, environmental engineering, and precision electronics and merged with Ebara Infilco (Co., Ltd.).
  • In 1996, it was reorganized into the Management Division and four business divisions of information and communication, machinery, environmental engineering, and precision electronics.
  • In 1997, a new China headquarters was established.
  • In 1999, Guohua Ebara Environmental Engineering Co., Ltd. was established in China.
  • In 2000, Ebara SERVICE (Co., Ltd.) and the general machinery sales department were integrated into Ebara Tech-Serve (Co., Ltd.) and Elliott Corporation was wholly acquired.
  • In 2003, 15 vertical axis centrifugal screw pumps were delivered to China.
  • In 2006, Ebara Machinery (China) Co., Ltd. was established.
  • In 2008, the Yantai production base of Ebara Machinery (China) Co., Ltd. was put into operation.
  • In 2009, we started selling the world-class ultra-efficient centrifugal freezer RTVF.
  • In 2012, the company celebrated its 100th anniversary.
